The Nature of an Islamic Bank

Abstract : Conventional banks deal in money and credit not in commodities. They trade in debt and cash. The business of banking is a special kind of business, and banks did not come up only after interest was legitimized. If Islamic banks want to trade in commodities and deferred sales, it will take them outside the scope of banking. They would no longer remain banks in the technical sense. If Islamic banks continue practicing murabaha, leasing and other financing techniques with fines imposed on delay in payment, they will be tending towards the conventional model of banking. Banking in the technical sense is a child of interest and it is difficult to islamise it. Those who ignore this reality may gain time but they will face the hard truth, in due course.
